MMP trustee John Orna-Ornstein takes on new role at Arts Council England

We would like to congratulate MMP trustee John Orna-Ornstein on his new role, taking over responsibility for the east of England for Arts Council England alongside his responsibilities as national director for museums. While John will be stepping down as a trustee, we are fortunate to have his continued guidance as a distinguished friend to the project. We have highly valued John’s contributions over the years and we thank him for all that he has done for us.

German School Velbert students at LSE

Thirty two sixth form students from Velbert – a town of 50,000 people in Northrhine Westphalia, Germany – visited our Germans in Britain exhibit at LSE. The students who are working towards their English A level equivalent with a focus on the history of diversity in Britain told us they were impressed by the exhibition and learned a lot about the diversity of their own backgrounds.

Talk and exhibition at Museums Association conference

We recently participated in the Museums Association conference, which took place 5-6 November 2015 in Birmingham. Migration Museum Project Director Sophie Henderson gave a talk about our work, and engaged in a discussion with Rhiannon Mason of Newcastle University and Avaes Mohammad of British Future about the ways museums can address the issue of migration. We also displayed a pop-up exhibition featuring our 100 Images of Migration and Keepsakes.

Our theatre-in-education programme, Migration Stories, is off to a roaring start! Working in partnership with Tamasha Theatre, we are pairing playwrights with students at 5 schools to create works around the pupils’ personal migration experiences. We held our first workshop with Bloomfield School, Arnos Grove in Enfield. Playwright Yolanda Mercy and director Pia Furtado led students through improvisation activities, discussion and creative letter writing. We will be back at Bloomfield on 21 March, when students will rehearse the script created by Yolanda for them and perform it after school. All pupils will get a part!
