Join us for a screening of a new oral history documentary exploring the history of immigration to the Tooting area of south-west London between 1948 and 1971.
Journeys is a documentary made by children from Furzedown Primary School and young people from CARAS (Community Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers), overseen by arts and education charity digital:works.
In 1948 the British Nationality Act was passed, inviting people from the Commonwealth to come to live and work in the UK. In this film some of the people who made this journey tell their stories of leaving home to seek a new life in this corner of south-west London. These are stories of excitement, hope and pain, the challenges of their journeys, setting up home, finding work, and going to school in the years up until 1971.
The film is part of Journeys, an oral history project exploring the history of immigration to the Tooting area of South West London between 1948 and 1971, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. For more information, visit the Journeys website.
