Learning

Our award-winning learning team runs in-person and online workshops and creates resources to facilitate informed conversations around migration among primary and secondary school children and universities. We also train and support teachers in how to approach teaching about migration and how to integrate it into a range of curriculum subjects, promoting connection, belonging and understanding through the exploration of first-hand migration stories.

We work alongside teachers, through schemes like Teach First Summer Project, to co-produce learning materials, and to better understand how we can provide crucial support to teachers and schools.

Our innovative learning approach, which focuses on discussion, lived experience and building connections, has been refined over the last decade, through working with over 35,000 learners and thousands of teachers.

For Students

While in our temporary home in Lewisham from 2020-2025, we engaged 17,500 students and 1,300 teachers through our learning programme. 84% of students said they found the workshops highly educational, 76% of students found their visit engaging and 81% said that they had a better understanding of migration after participating in museum activities. Feedback showed that 100% of teachers were satisfied with the content and relevance of the workshops. We also facilitated talks and workshops for university students.

We do not currently have a venue open to the public, so we are unable to host in-person school trips. Our award winning learning team is continuing their work through in-school outreach, online visits and walking tours. If you are a school based outside of London, please get in touch to see what we can offer you.

Sessions:

Cross-Curricular
KS1 + KS2

Understand key migration language and reasons why people migrate through our interactive KS1 + KS2 sessions. These sessions explore personal stories of migration as a way to understand the theme, and explore students own connections to migration.

KS3

This cross-curricular session explores how we can understand the complexities of migration through personal stories, linking to both local areas and students own connections to migration.

Geography
KS3 + KS4

Explore what we can learn about migration from different data sources – and what might be missing. Through looking at national statistics, personal stories and the media, we examine the topic of migration and how to get a full picture of it.

A Level

The A Level Geography workshop is an interactive talk which highlights how personal stories can broaden our understanding of migration beyond facts and figures.

History
GCSE

This workshop supports the migration unit for OCR, AQA and Pearson-Edexcel. This session looks at the long history of migration to and from the UK, drawing connections between these moments and the experiences of different migration groups. It also focuses on source analysis and highlighting the students’ own connections to the migration moments they are studying.

For Teachers

Young people are growing up in a world where they are facing issues about which there are increasingly polarised opinions. Schools are a key environment within which these issues can be explored, and teachers need to have the skill and confidence to support their pupils in this. Themes related to migration are often seen as controversial, particularly while immigration remains such a hot topic in party politics.

We aim to help and support teachers when teaching about migration, to ensure you and your pupils get the most out of exploring these themes.

If you are interested in ITT or CPD, want advice on resources or how best to teach about migration, then please get in touch with Head of Learning Liberty – liberty@migrationmuseum.org.
