Accum was a German chemist who came to London from Bückeburg in 1793. By 1800 he had set up as a professor of Chemistry giving public lectures from his home and laboratory in Soho. He was a pioneer of gas lighting who built London’s first gas works, together with his partner Frederick Winzer from Brunswick. Their Gas Light and Coke Company eventually became British Gas.
Accum’s practical science also included campaigning against food adulteration. His many publications about food included an 1821 treatise, On the Art of Making Good and Wholesome Bread.
